FIND A SOLUTION  AT  Academic Writers Bay

STATS216v Introduction to Statistical LearningStanford University, Summer 2018Problem Set 1
Due: Friday, July 6Remember the university honor code. All work and answers must be your own.
1. Explain whether each scenario below is a regression, classification or unsupervised
learning problem. If it is a supervised learning scenario, indicate whether we are more
interested in inference or prediction. Finally, provide in each case the number of observations, n, and the number of predictors, p.
(a) Oil excavation is a very expensive process and the oil resources are not distributed
uniformly in an area, so it is important to find the best spots for oil extraction. To
do this engineers consider a very coarse grid (each edge length is on the order of
miles), dig a well at the vertices of the grid and take a sample of the sand there.
24 different measurements are taken from each sand sample. An engineer has sand
samples for 35 locations where they know the results of the digging (how much
oil was present at that location). Additionally, the engineer has sand samples for
80 prospective well locations, and wishes to find the most promising spot to dig a
future well.
(b) An online retailer must decide whether to display advertisement A or advertisement
B to each customer on the basis of collected customer demographics (age, zip code,
and gender). A set of 300 of its customers have already expressed a preference for
one advertisement or the other.
(c) A policy analyst is interested in discovering factors that are associated with the
unemployment rate across different U.S. cities. For each of 400 cities, the policy
analyst gathers the following data: the population, state, average income, crime
rate, percentage of students who graduate high school and unemployment level.
(d) Stanford received 42,000 undergraduate applications in the year 2017. The application includes the following data for each applicant: age, high school GPA, scores in
the SAT Critical Reading, SAT Math and SAT Writing exams, and whether they
are domestic or international. The university wishes to understand the different
subtypes of students in the application pool.
(e) A neuroscientist wishes to develop a tool that can identify the type of cells based
on a few measurements. Each cell is one of three types: glial cell, motor neuron
cell, or horizontal cell. The neuroscientist has 68 labeled cells, each with three measurements available: the number of branch points, the number of active processes,
and the average process length.2. You are a data science consultant! In each of the following cases, decide whether you
would suggest a flexible regression model or an inflexible one. Provide your reasons as
clearly as possible.
(a) In the study of breast cancer, a scientist is trying to find the genes associated with
breast cancer. The total number of genes in the study is 50,000 and the number
of patients is 120.
(b) The Ministry of Education in a certain country wants to identify students who
need extra help. They wish to design a system which estimates student performance in the final 8th grade math exam based on their math, science and history
grades in the 7th grade. To do this, they want to run a regression on the data
from all the students who have graduated from the 8th grade in the last 10 years.
(c) Kelly is a very hardworking chemistry student and she has run an experiment
to find a mathematical expression that relates the speed of corrosion of iron to
the humidity and temperature of the environment, and the percentage of different elements in the alloy. Unfortunately, the lab that she is working in was
established in 1967 and the equipment has not been changed since then. This has
caused measurements to vary significantly between different experimental runs,
even when the parameters were the same. She is skeptical about the quality of
her measurements of the speed of corrosion.
(d) Kelly’s advisor won the Nobel prize in chemistry and used the prize money to
outfit the lab with the most modern equipment. Kelly ran her experiments again
with the new equipment and now she can trust her numbers. However, her advisor
believes that she should not expect that the real relationship be linear.

Planning Process Paper

FIND A SOLUTION  AT  Academic Writers Bay

I will compare the planning process to my current workplace. Followed by what I believe would be more crucial and why I think that. Also, I will briefly go over why I do not believe organizations can over-plan during this process. The Basic: Planning Process Step #1: Situational Analysis—This step is where you would typically answer the question, “Where are we now? ” (Amicaall). In my current workplace, the main focus in this step is to be sure that the customer is aware of the customer survey that lucky few may receive.
Now, the goal is to be sure the ones who may receive this survey are honest when filling it out with the most accurate information. All survey’s are read and sent to the dealership the vehicle was serviced, or purchased. Therefore, any concern from the customer will highly be considered. We assure that ever individual that has an opportunity of receiving one of these important surveys is aware when delivering the vehicle after any services. So that if there is an issue with the service, that they please notify us before filling out the survey this way we are sure the customer is happy with all services.
Also, so that the consumer will know how honesty we stand by our word of correcting and listening to their suggestions by making them happy right away. “Planners should gather, interpret, and summarize all information relevant to the planning issue in question. A through situational analysis studies past events, examines current conditions, and attempts to forecast future trends” (Bateman & Snell, 2007). By us being sure that are customers are aware of the survey ahead of time, we are more than likely to get a better knowledge of where we may need to focus more on improving or attempting the consumer’s ideas.
By doing so, we are more like to achieve reaching our goals. Step #2: Alternative Goals and Plans—“based on the situational analysis, the planning process should generate alternative goals that may be pursued in the future and the alternative plans that may be used to achieve those goals” (Bateman & Snell, 2007). A lot of our goals set at work are not just to be sure that all customers are happy but also that they know if there’s something that has not instantly been put into effect that we are still in the process of doing so.
It may be something that takes a little more financial effort as well as time. For example, a lot of customer have mentioned the would like if their vehicle was washed and vacuumed after every service. We state the following to the customer when this is brought to our attention, “As of now we are relocating to another facility, fortunately we will be in a bigger building that will also have a car wash available. But for now we have washed your windows and vacuumed the vehicle. We look forward to being able to serve you better. Step #3: Goal and Plan Evaluation—“next, managers will evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, and potential effects of each alternative goal and plan” (Bateman & Snell, 2007). This is pretty simple; the goal and plan evaluation is discussed every morning within our manager meetings. Some of the ideas in plans they’ve discussed in meetings are the following: complimentary snacks, drinks, opening a Starbucks coffee station and mailing/emailing great coupons, specials off of services, even possibly a parking garage.
The managers gather together to see what is best benefiting the customers and if there are any new ideas that may be brought to their attention. One, manager even stated he over heard a customer state to another customer, “that it wouldn’t be a bad idea if they had wireless internet so that I could continue to work while my vehicle is being serviced, you would think they would be caught up with the technology no days. ” If so what they plan on doing to implant them, are they realistic and attainable?
While in the meeting they’ll discuss several ideas and examples of how to keep all eyes and ears open for any future goals and plans. Step #4: Goal and Plan Selection—“once managers have assessed the various goals and plans, they will select the one that’s most appropriate and feasible” (Bateman & Snell, 2007). After everyone discussing and gathering information from consistent consumers the dealership has decided to select the following as plans for the future; parking garage, complimentary drinks, a Starbucks station that consists of snacks, breakfast and lunch sandwiches up for purchase.
Until the Starbucks station has built their customers, we have coupon vouchers so that the customer may have their first Starbuck’s Drinks for free. As all these ideas come out the next step would be to be sure the news letter gets mailed and emailed out to all of our customers and consumers. The newsletters will state all goals and plans that have been selected for our future facility. Step #5: Implementation—“once managers have selected the goals and plans, they must implement the plans designed to achieve the goals” (Bateman & Snell, 2007). Well, as of now the dealership has implemented a lot of the planned goals.
By this I mean, we now have a Starbucks station filled with snacks and many different beverages. We also have put a refrigerator full of all types of sodas and water all complimentary for all customers and purchaser of Toyota Sales and Service. As for the Parking Garage and Car Wash they are both in the works, we have blue prints showing where the next facility will be built. Step #6: Monitor and Control—“although it is sometimes ignore, this step in the formal planning process is essential. Planning works in a cycle; it is an ongoing, repetitive process. (Bateman & Snell, 2007).
Now, the way the company monitors and tracks all the works in cycle is by asking all customers that look like they have purchased or used the vouchers if they enjoy having Starbucks. All mentioned it’s a great change and they all thanked the company for taking the time to listen to their ideas. The managers noticed that all surveys they were receiving had plenty comments about how the changes really benefit them. A lot commented on the wireless internet how covenant it was to have service performed on their vehicle and it didn’t even seem that they weren’t at work because they could still use their computer and complete work assignments.
To management it seemed that they were on the right track, by listening to the customers they could make most of them happy and keep their business. By doing so it seems that they’re helping to provide a better workplace as well as a great setting for people to achieve personal as well as career goals. In conclusion, an organization can not be very successful if they do not stay within the basic planning process. As I’ve explained above every step is very important, though one I believe is most crucial and that is Step #! Situational Analysis. The reason why I feel this is most important is because if you analyze a situation incorrectly then you may be headed in the wrong direction as far as improving. The situation may not need any correction or improvement at the time, therefore the situation that needs most improvement may be overlooked. I don’t believe that any organization may over plan because the more effort put into planning the more correction or ideas may be created. This will prepare the organization for several different scenarios.

Evaluate how the audit process monitors|Microeconomics
“The Right Way” Please respond to the following:
At times, purchasing agents of all kinds have to make difficult decisions. From the case study, determine why you think Bullock Studios arrived at the decision to properly enter the cameras and camera cases.
Review the Compliance Management Structure found in Chapter 13 and discuss how you would apply it to the Bullock Studios case study.
Question 2=
At times, purchasing agents of all kinds have to make difficult decisions. From the case study, determine why you think Bullock Studios arrived at the decision to properly enter the cameras and camera cases.
The reason they arrived at the decision to enter the cameras and cases is because they were uneasy about the information that they received from their personal broker. Instead of leaning on the word of the broker they decided to seek information from a third party consultant which turned out to be the better way to go. There is nothing wrong with seeking another opinion, especially when doing business, because the decisions you make can make or break the company, so you want to ensure that you are indeed making the right decision.
Review the Compliance Management Structure found in Chapter 13 and discuss how you would apply it to the Bullock Studios case study.
When reviewing the Compliance Management Structure, Bullock followed through with the following:
1. Validation Process: This process is used to properly analyze the purchase process and valuation structure and the shipping and receiving practices of the transactions. To accomplish this Bullock sought out clarification in whether or not the camera and camera cases should be packaged separately or together
2. Internal Supervision and Control: Bullock is a company that appears to be very knowledgeable about its import and export responsibilities. In this section it is best to be able to control the actions of your broker and freight forwarder, this is a compliance strength. It is good to know your third party strengths and weaknesses to avoid delays in service and potential fines in penalty. Bullock was not secure with the advice that was given by their broker, so instead they took control of the situation and sought a second opinion. I’m sure Bullock knew the strengths of their third party consultant and knew that their uncertainty would diminish after consulting with them. This proves right because in the end Bullock made the right decision by taking the advice that was given to them by the third party consultant.
Question 3=
“Compliance Management” Please respond to the following:
To ensure that compliance management is effectively implemented, senior management endorsement, education and training, and ownership are necessary. Describe how you would manage all of these elements in order to become the “go to” person in your company.
Evaluate how the audit process monitors the compliance management structure to ensure its purpose is intact.
Question 4=
To ensure that compliance management is effectively implemented, senior management endorsement, education and training, and ownership are necessary. Describe how you would manage all of these elements in order to become the “go to” person in your company.
In order to become the “go to” person in the company you first have to understand how each area works. As the go to person, I will take the initiative to ensure that I am well educated and trained on every aspect of the business. Through quality and assurance I will be tested and reviewed to ensure that I comprehend what I am learning. I would partake in ongoing education such as seminars, book reading, online courses, etc to ensure that I am up on the latest information. By keeping myself well educated/trained I will be able to ensure that my organization gets the appropriate assistance needed regarding regulatory affairs that are related to Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, BIS, FDA, USDA, TSA, etc. Lastly, such actions will allow me to identify and risks that may occur and take ownership in correcting the matter and implementing change.
Evaluate how the audit process monitors the compliance management structure to ensure its purpose is intact.
To ensure an effective approach to compliance, the board and management should make compliance a high priority. The participation of senior management in the development and maintenance of a compliance program is essential. The board and senior management periodically should review the effectiveness of its compliance management system. This review should include reports which identify any weaknesses or required modifications due to changes in laws, regulations, or policy statements. Prompt, capable management response to those weaknesses and required changes is the final measure of the compliance system’s effectiveness. Senior management must assign well qualified staff and resources to properly implement and administer the compliance program. Participation at all levels in the compliance management system is important to its success.
