Strategic Management
Week 5© 2014 Laureate Education, Inc. Page 0 of 4Management SchoolKey ConceptOverviewSetting A Strategic PurposeKey ConceptSetting a strategic purposeThe module readings thus far, and hopefully, the collaborative discussions, have identified that, at the
corporate level, the responsibility of the organisation is to define the high level view of where it is going
over the longer term. This raises several issues around how organisations and industries define longer
term. In the automotive sector, the longer term can be in the order of three to five years, whereas in the
technology sector it can be as short as six months. It is vital for corporate-level managers to be keenly
aware of not only the strategic planning time frame but also the vision of the organisation itself. Without
vision, any strategic plan would be worthless.
To be able to produce corporate-level strategy, executives must also be able to manage the derivation
and allocation of resources which are necessary for the implementation of the strategic plan. All of these
issues are interdependent upon and inter-related with the mission and vision of the organisation. The
concept of a mission and/or vision statement as a channel through which corporate-level executives can
communicate intended direction for the organisation is gaining favour. However, it is important for any
mission or vision statement to be carefully thought out before corporate-level executives use it. At best,
such statements can provide a clear direction for an organisation; at worst, it can be little more than
instantly forgettable ‘spin’. Clarity in an organisation’s mission and vision statements is likely to provide a
sound basis from which to derive corporate-level strategy. Without this clarity, it is unlikely that corporatelevel managers will be able to derive an organisation- wide strategy from which policies, guiding
frameworks, and operational plans can be developed.Strategy statementsStrategy statements serve several purposes. They codify the organisation’s mission, vision,
objectives/goals and scope, and define how the organisation will achieve advantage (in the private sector,
this tends to refer to competitive advantage, and, in the public sector, it focusses on organisational
capability more generally).
How organisations express their key purposes and objectives presents a variety of terms that can be
confusing; values, mission, vision, goals and objectives can often mean different things to different
organisations. One firm’s vision will be another’s mission. Some companies will use all the above terms to
communicate organisational purpose, while others will work with only one or two.Vision and missionBy its very nature, a vision must be bold in order to inspire and motivate people; however, if it is too
ambitious or unrealistic, it may lose its power to engage employees over time. Generally, the vision refers
to the desired future that the organisation is trying to achieve. Collins and Porras (2006) suggest that ‘an
envisioned future helps an organisation only as long as it hasn’t yet been achieved.’ And we could add to
this ‘as long as it is seen as credible by staff.’ Organisations must therefore regularly review their vision to
ensure that it is still relevant to the external context in which they operate.
Whilst the vision defines the preferred state an organisation intends to reach, the mission is the overriding purpose of the organisation. Many organisations communicate their mission through an explicit
mission statement. This would usually be relatively brief, inspiring, distinctive, specific statement about
what the organisation wants to achieve. Most importantly, it must be credible to ensure that all
stakeholders will get behind and uphold it. The mission statement is often used to help an organ…

Fiction Essay InstructionsYou must complete the required textbook readings in preparation for the Fiction Essay. This will equip you to objectively respond to the readings by compiling information from a variety of sources in order to compose a persuasive analysis of a literary work. You will also learn to follow standard usage in English grammar and sentence structure; identify the theme and structure of each literary selection as well as the significant characteristics or elements of each genre studied; and evaluate the literary merit of a work (Syllabus MLOs: A, B, C, D, F, G and Module/Week 3 LOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).In Module/Week 3, you will write a 750-word (approximately 3 pages) essay that compares and contrasts 2 stories from the Fiction Unit. Before you begin writing the essay, carefully read the below guidelines for developing your paper topic and review the Fiction Essay Grading Rubric to see how your submission will be graded. Gather all of your information, plan the direction of your essay, and organize your ideas by developing a 1-page thesis statement and outline for your essay. Format the thesis statement and the outline in a single Microsoft Word document using current MLA, APA, or Turabian style (whichever corresponds to your degree program); check your Perrine’s Literature textbook, the Harbrace Essentials Handbook and/or the link contained in the Assignment Instructions Folder to ensure correct citation format is used.Your Fiction Essay must include a title page, a thesis/outline page, and the essay itself, followed by a works cited/references/bibliography page listing any primary and/or secondary texts cited in your essay. You must submit your thesis and outline by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 2 for instructor feedback.Submit your Fiction Essay by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 3Guidelines for Developing Your Paper TopicThe “Writing about Literature” section of your Perrine’s Literature textbook (pp. 1–54) and the “Writing” section of Harbrace Essentials (pp. 1–12, 15–16, 18–21, 22–28) provide helpful pointers for writing your literary essay and for academic writing in general. FIND A SOLUTION  AT  Academic Writers Bay

Book Review 2 The Second Book Review is based upon required course readings that proffer contemporary accounts of the lived experience of Confucianism and Islam. The reviews call for you to consider the contemporary expressions of these faiths and to reflect upon their relevance to your own and our collective societal experience–To consider how central teachings, principals and practices of these faith traditions could be introduced and implemented into your own life, experience and American culture so as to lend to your personal and our collective edification. In light of the above description from our course syllabus, your review of Ali Eteraz’s book, Children of the Dust, ought to consider the following: How journey is a common motif in spiritual writings—Eteraz’s journey from childhood to adulthood and from Pakistan to the United States and how these journeys, in turn, convey Eteraz’s evolving self-understanding, spiritual maturation, understanding of Islam, etc. Eteraz’s and his family’s experience of Islam/the Islamic ethos during their residency in Pakistan and America, respectively. How Islam/the Islamic ethos is expressed in contemporary Pakistani culture—Including, when relevant/pertinent, consideration and assessment of central Islamic tenets operative in and experienced by the Eteraz’s during their residency in contemporary Pakistan. The Eteraz’s experience of how Islam is perceived by certain segments of the population in the United States via consideration of relevant/pertinent experiences of the Eteraz’s during their residency in contemporary America…and how Ali’s American experiences impacted, informed, shaped and colored his spiritual journey and his understanding of his faith/religion. What lessons we can take from Eteraz’s experiences that might contribute to a better social experience in our culture and to the improvement of ourselves as individuals as we undergo our own journeys and spiritual maturation, and as our own religious understandings and sensitivities evolve. Additionally: Allow the review to be an occasion by which you reflect upon and consider aspects, anecdotes and aspects of the book and the experience of Eteraz which particularly struck you in some way—positively and/or negatively—and critically engage and assess why this was the case. This may lead some to gravitate on issues relevant to social analysis or cultural rites of passage or interpersonal relationships or religious toleration…In short, there is freedom for you to pursue points of particular interest to you and/or relevant to your major. The book reviews are to be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, and approximately five pages in length.
